WorkForce WV now taking applications for 13-week unemployment benefits extension

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As many as 16,000 unemployed workers in West Virginia whose 26-week unemployment benefits have expired in the last 10 months can now apply for a 13-week extension under Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation.

WorkForce West Virginia began receiving applications on the agency’s website Wednesday for the extension, according to WorkForce acting Commissioner Scott Adkins.

“About halfway down the page there’s a big green ribbon that goes across the screen, click that button. The application is pretty simple. There’s about eight questions you need to certify to,” Adkins said during a Wednesday appearance on MetroNews “Talkline.”

Only those who have had their benefits expire since last July 1 and remain unemployed are eligible in the current application period, Adkins said.

“If your unemployment ended from July 1, 2019, to now, then all you need to do is complete that application. We have most of your data in the system already and we’ll start to issue payment in the next day or two,” Adkins said.

The payment for the 13-week extension will be what the claimant was receiving in a weekly benefit during the 26-week period plus the additional $600 a week made available through the CARES Act. The benefits are retroactive to March 29. The 13-week period ends June 27.

Adkins said those currently still receiving unemployment benefits will be contacted by WorkForce when they can apply for the extension.

“If you are already receiving unemployment benefits at this point you don’t need to do anything at all,” Adkins said. “If your unemployment benefits have not expired you can’t make application (ahead of time) for PEUC for the extra 13 weeks.”

Application can be made at workforcewv.org.
