CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The director of the state Division of Forestry, state forester, Barry Cook has died.
Gov. Jim Justice said a tragic accident took Cook’s life this week. He died Saturday.
“A man with so much life in front of him. I just hate it,” Justice said during his coronavirus media briefing Tuesday at the state capitol.
State Commerce Secretary Ed Gaunch echoed Justice’s comments.
“It is with great sadness I share with you the tragic, accidental death of our Director of Forestry, Barry Cook,” Gaunch said. “Barry was a committed, dedicated employee who embraced the mission to protect and preserve our forests and all the value they bring to our state. He will be missed by his family, the employees of the Division of Forestry and all who knew him. Please respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
Justice said Cook gave expertise to many “way beyond forestry.”
“He was a really good man and I got an opportunity to know him and the great work he had done,” Justice said.
Cook was seriously injured in an accident that took place late last month.
Justice will appoint Cook’s replacement.
