CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Health and Human Resources was reporting 65 deaths in West Virginia linked to COVID-19 as of Sunday morning.
That number, though, did not yet include a second death in Fayette County that was reported locally.
On Saturday, officials with the Fayette County Health Department confirmed the death of an 89-year-old man from Fayette County, which was added to the state death toll, and the death of an 85-year-old woman from Fayette County, which was to be added later.
The deaths were first two COVID-19 deaths in Fayette County.
At 10 a.m. Sunday, the latest information from DHHR showed 1,492 positive cases of COVID-19 in 53 West Virginia counties dating back to the middle of March out of 75,404 laboratory results sent to DHHR.
The infection rate, comparing positive tests to numbers of tests conducted, was at 1.98 percent.
Of the total cases, 473 were classified as “active” with 48 people hospitalized. An estimated 919 had recovered, according to DHHR.
