Six schools claim WVSSAC MVB Champions Cup titles

VIENNA, W.Va. — Six different high schools won WVSSAC MVB Champions Cups in the 2019-2020 sports season. A points system encompassed all sports for which a season was completed (basketball and spring sports are not included).

 

 

Boys Class AAA:

  1. Wheeling Park – 486.5
  2. George Washington – 482.5
  3. University – 386.5

Wheeling Park claimed runner-up finishes in golf and wrestling. They also received points from swimming and soccer.

Boys Class AA:

  1. Fairmont Senior – 590.5
  2. Bridgeport – 492
  3. Winfield – 384.5

The Polar Bears edged Big 10 Conference rival Bridgeport by winning state championships in the first three sports of the season (golf, cross country and soccer). FSHS also advanced to the semifinals in football and finished third in wrestling.

Boys Class A:

  1. Doddridge County – 492.4
  2. Ritchie County – 487.5
  3. Charleston Catholic – 390.5

The Bulldogs used state runner-up finishes in football and cross country and a fourth-place finish in wrestling to hold off Route 50 rival Ritchie County.

Girls Class AAA:

  1. George Washington – 490.5
  2. Morgantown – 483.5
  3. Hurricane – 481.5

The Patriots won titles in volleyball and swimming and also earned points from their finishes in cheerleading and volleyball.

George Washington’s girls swim team claimed its seven state championship and first since 2016.

Class AA:

  1. Bridgeport – 587
  2. Winfield – 485
  3. Fairmont Senior – 384

Bridgeport defended their Class AA crown thanks in part to their cheerleading title and points scored from cross country, soccer, volleyball and swimming.

Class A:

  1. Williamstown – 291.5
  2. Moorefield – 279.5
  3. Paden City – 199

Williamstown won the Class A cross country championship and also scored points from their regional berth in soccer.
