World TeamTennis season to be hosted at The Greenbrier

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — World TeamTennis will play its entire 45th season of competition at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. The tour announced its formal plans on Tuesday.

World TeamTennis was founded in 1974 and is contested every summer in conjunction with the U.S. hard court season. Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens are top Americans expected to compete.

The 63-match regular season will be condensed in 19 days of competition from July 12 to July 30. Semifinal and championship matches will be held August 1 and 2. CBS and CBS Sports Network will televise select matches. Other matches will be broadcast on Tennis Channel, ESPN+ or WTT.com. The complete schedule will be announced soon.

With the ATP (men’s) and WTA (women’s) tours halted, several world class players could join the league as a tuneup for late-summer tournaments, including the U.S. Open. Nine coed teams from across the nation were originally scheduled to compete.

“All of us at World TeamTennis are extremely grateful to be able to play the 45th World TeamTennis season and present professional tennis to our sports-starved and tennis-starved audiences through our media partners at CBS Sports, ESPN and Tennis Channel,” WTT CEO Carlos Silva said.

“The overwhelming feedback from our players is that they want to play WTT and are comfortable in doing so in a safe environment, which is our number one priority. West Virginia has among the nation’s fewest cases of COVID-19 and I’m grateful to The Greenbrier, the city of White Sulphur Springs, and Dr. Jill Justice for being so welcoming and allowing World TeamTennis to play on in 2020.”

The Greenbrier’s tennis stadium, Center Court at Creekside, seats 2,500 fans and is located near the first tee of The Old White TPC golf course. The stadium has hosted exhibition events featuring Serena and Venus Williams, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.

Up to 500 fans per match will be allowed to attend the outdoor matches. That represents about 20 percent of the normal spectator capacity. Indoor courts could also be used if needed due to inclement weather.

The Greenbrier will no longer host their annual PGA Tour event but NFL teams have expressed interest in holding their training camps at the resort this summer. The Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints have conducted preseason drills there in recent years.
