Nine COVID-19 cases linked to Hampshire County church service

ROMNEY, W.Va. — A Mother’s Day church service in Hampshire County has lead to an outbreak of COVID-19.

According to Hampshire County Health Department Local Health Administrator Stephanie Shoemaker, a service was held May 10 at the church where about 30 people were in attendance.

“Individuals were becoming symptomatic and went to their local providers to receive testing and when it came back positive through contact tracing we identified additional people that were having symptoms and we had them go to their local providers for testing and it just snowballed from there,” Shoemaker said.

Nine positive COVID-19 cases have been linked to that service. The church is currently closed to in person service and will continue to be closed for now. Shoemaker said officials with the church have been cooperative and are following the CDC guidelines.

Shoemaker said no one is hospitalized.

“Everyone is doing fine. We’re checking on them (daily),” Shoemaker said during an appearance Friday on MetroNews “Talkline.”

Shoemaker said overall Hampshire County has fared well during the pandemic although this has been a rough week in terms of the increased number of cases. She said residents need to continue to be cautious, wear masks and continue social distancing.

“We’re keeping an eye on that. We’re hoping it was just a bad week and in coming weeks we’ll level back out to our normal just a few cases here and there,” Shoemaker said.

Case information released by the state Department of Health and Human Resources Friday morning show 29 confirmed cases overall in Hampshire County since the pandemic began in early March.

The church is not being identified publicly.
