Leonhardt, Beach face off for agriculture commissioner seat

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Incumbent Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt will face state Sen. Bob Beach, D-Monongalia, in November’s general election contest after both won their respective primaries Tuesday.

Leonhardt defeated Roy Ramey, as Beach beat William Keplinger and David Miller.

Beach credited his win to social media outreach, as candidates were unable to knock on doors because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It was a social media campaign from beginning to end. In the last few weeks before Election Day, we got out with a few folks we wanted to visit with and touch base,” he said. “If you didn’t have a good social media game plan, you were going to get caught off guard.”

Beach served in the House of Delegates from 1998 to 2010 before being elected to the Senate in 2010.

Leonhardt served as state senate for District 2 from 2015 to 2017. He defeated Walt Helmick in the 2016 election.
