CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Jim Justice announced Thursday the board of directors of the State Fair of West Virginia have voted to go ahead with the fair set to begin in mid-August at the state fairgrounds in Greenbrier County.
“I congratulate the board of directors,” Justice said.
Justice announced previously fairs and festivals could begin in West Virginia under coronavirus-related guidelines on July 1. He also has announced that open air concerts can take place under specific guidelines.
Justice said the fair is “so meaningful to so many.”
“I’m sure they are going to abide by very strict guidelines,” he said.
Justice said social distancing will be the key.
“I’m sure the guidelines that we’re giving and that the State Fair’s giving are going to be the best possible that we can do. It’s not perfect, we know it’s not perfect,” Justice said.
Fair CEO Kelly Collins told MetroNews she is thrilled with the decision.
“We are very excited. I think it’s a step in the right direction and we are excited to be able to put on a fun and safe State Fair of West Virginia,” Collins said.
Collins said the guidelines, which are still being worked on, include extra hand washing stations and hand sanitization stations across the property. There will also be increased cleaning procedures, employee screenings, social distancing requirements, and face mask recommendations.
She also noted changes in programming that will be announced in the coming weeks including to live stock shows, free entertainment and concerts.
The fair is scheduled from August 13-22.
Justice said the vote came Wednesday by the board. During his remarks Thursday, Justice encouraged state residents to attend this year’s fair especially for the young people who work hard to show their animals.
Collins said the fair is thankful for the support from the governor’s office, local supporters and supporters statewide.
“With their support, and their partnership to help put on a fair, we think it’s going to be a great time,” she said.
“There’s an economic impact to our state that the state fair has and it’s a morale boost to what has been some troubling months for us.”
