119 COVID-19 cases added as state prepares for two-day testing in 6 counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Health and Human Resources added 119 new COVID-19 cases Thursday taking the state’s total since the pandemic started to 3,826 total cases. The DHHR is reporting 1,013 active cases.

The state’s positive daily test rate, which was above five percent Wednesday, dropped to 4.42 percent Thursday.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 did increase Thursday to 50, the highest since 54 people were hospitalized on May 6. Hospitalizations have more than doubled in one week. The number was at 23 on July 2.

COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia remain at 95.

The DHHR and the West Virginia National Guard will be work with county health departments for free and open testing events Friday and Saturday. Organizers expect busy days.

“We have received a lot of phone calls, a lot of questions on social media, very, very, large number of questions concerning this and we are expecting what we believe will be a very large turnout,” Marshall County Health Department Threat Preparedness Director Mark Ackermann told MetroNews.
