People living near Morgantown may have been charged city sales tax

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — People who were improperly charged Morgantown’s sales tax will have to seek reimbursement through the West Virginia State Tax Department.

Morgantown and state officials have been working to address problems caused by the incorrect 1% charge. The State Tax Department collects all municipal sales and use taxes and distributes revenues to cities.

According to Morgantown officials, people placed near boundaries were counted as needed to pay the fees.

“If your household is outside the city limits and you buy from Amazon and Amazon charges you 7%, you can keep your receipt, go out get this form and print it out,” Morgantown finance director Jim Goff said.

Affected residents can find a form at https://tax.wv.gov/Documents/TaxForms/cst240.pdf or call 1-800-982-8297.
