Remains found in Hampshire County believed to be that of missing teenager

AUGUSTA, W.Va. — Hampshire County authorities found human remains in a shallow grave late Saturday morning believed to be that of a missing teenage boy.

Jonathon Adams

Jonathon Adams, 14, was reported missing July 12 in the Augusta area. The search for him intensified over the last few days.

The remains were located at about 11:20 a.m. Saturday in a heavily wooded area near the place where Adams was reported missing last Sunday morning.  The discovery brought to a close a 100 acre search Saturday that involved approximately a dozen agencies. The area of the recovery was extremely difficult  to access due to heavy underbrush, according to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators said a suspect has been developed in connection with the death. The sheriff’s department also said a 16-year-old relative of Adams had been arrested and charged with burglary.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” a news release from the sheriff’s department Saturday evening said. “The sheriff’s office would like to thank the community for their tips and support during this investigation.”
Adams had been living with relatives in Hampshire County since March. He was from Connecticut.

The remains have been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for official identification.
