Body of missing angler found in Tug Fork

Dennis “Bimbo” Gearles

MATEWAN, W.Va. — Search crews located the body of a missing fisherman in the Tug Fork River in Mingo County Saturday.

According to the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department, Dennis “Bimbo” Gearles disappeared while fishing with two friends on the river early Saturday morning. The Jon boat the three were fishing from capsized in the Thacker area which is near Matewan. Two of the men managed to swim to shore, but Gearles was not seen again.

Volunteer fire fighters from several departments were on the river Saturday morning at daylight looking for Gearles. His body was found about 10:30 a.m.

Authorities say the river was up and water was murky.

An investigation into the incident continues.
