DHHR: 3 more COVID-19 deaths, 12 this week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — There have been 12 COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia this week after the state Department of Health and Human Resources confirmed three additional deaths Thursday evening.

The virus-related deaths of a 49-year-old woman from Ohio County, a 59-year-old man from Logan County and an 85-year-old woman from Logan County add to what’s been the deadliest week since the pandemic began.

“The passing of these West Virginians is reported with a heavy heart and we extend our sympathies to their loved ones,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said.

Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to be at their highest levels. There are now 102 people hospitalized in West Virginia, 40 are in intensive care, with 19 being treated on ventilators.

While deaths and hospitalizations have increased, the rate of increase for active cases has declined.

The state only added 48 positive cases between its Thursday morning and evening reports and active cases continue to drop. There were 1,604 active cases at the end of the day Thursday, down about two dozen from earlier in the day.

Gov. Jim Justice is expected to have another media briefing on the state’s response to the virus Friday at the state capitol.
