Martin won’t play this season at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mountaineer sophomore safety Kerry “KJ” Martin, Jr. says he’s opting out of the coming football season because of the coronavirus.

Martin, a Capital High School graduate. posted a message on Twitter Wednesday morning saying after talking with his family they feel it’s better for to opt out of the coming season “due to my family and own personal health issues.” Martin mentioned sickle cell and asthma as two of those issues.

Martin said he’s also opting out because he doesn’t feel his body matches his mental state to play the game.

Martin said he’ll be back for his redshirt sophomore season in 2021.

It was Martin’s tweets earlier this summer about former WVU Defensive Coordinator Vic Koenning that resulted in Koeenning and WVU parting ways last month.

Martin appeared in all twelve games for West Virginia as a true freshman in 2019. He was the Mountaineers’ sixth-leading tackler with 50 stops.

Prior to arriving at WVU, Martin played quarterback and defensive back for the Capital Cougars, leading them to three consecutive state semifinal appearances in his last three seasons at CHS.
