Martinsburg football practices stalled due to positive COVID contact

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Preseason football practices at Martinsburg High School are paused after a positive COVID contact around the program. MHS Principal Trent Sherman released a statement on the school’s Facebook and Twitter sites Wednesday afternoon stating that a person who was in attendance at football practice notified school administration of a positive test for COVID-19.

The statement adds that the status of the Bulldogs’ season opener (vs. Musselman) on September 4 is still being considered and more information will be forthcoming. The Bulldogs did not practice Wednesday afternoon.

Football teams are required to have fourteen practice days prior to the start of official competition. If the pause in practices is lengthy, the season opener may have to be delayed or moved to another spot on the schedule.

Preseason practices are also paused in Monroe County after a recent surge in positive cases. Logan County teams have not yet begun preseason practices.

Martinsburg has won 56 consecutive games and the last 4 Class AAA state championships.
