CHARMCO, W.Va. — A balanced offensive attack and a pair of touchdowns coming off Pendleton County turnovers led Greenbrier West to an impressive 40-20 win Friday night.
The Cavaliers received a three-touchdown effort from senior Cole McClung to hand the Wildcats their second consecutive loss.
“Cole McClung is a great football player,” said Greenbrier West head coach Toby Harris. “He played a great game at linebacker. He just wears you down when he is running the football. He had a good game.”
Tied 6-6 late in the second quarter, the Cavaliers retook the lead with a 3-yard touchdown run from Noah Brown. On Pendleton’s ensuing possession, Kaiden Pack intercepted a pass and returned it to midfield. Three plays later, Pack tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Holliday. All of a sudden, the Cavaliers took a 15-point lead into the locker room at 21-6.
“That was big. We needed that at that time. We were fortunate to get it. That was a big turning point in the ball game.”
Pendleton answered when Isaiah Gardiner connected with Braden McClanahan on their second touchdown reception of the game to make it 21-14. But the Cavaliers scored 19 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
“We had a few little mistakes but we are generally pleased with what they did. They are a good football team. Getting 40 points on them is an accomplishment.”
Greenbrier West improved to 3-0 and they will visit Webster County next Friday.
