Roundup: Eleven teams race out to 3-0 starts

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A look around the Mountain State for news and notes during the third week of the high school football season.

Jackson hauls in three first half TDs, Park tops Huntington

Shaheed Jackson had three receiving touchdowns in the second quarter to help stake Wheeling Park to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to the Patriots’ 42-21 win at Huntington.

Wheeling Park (2-1) also got a 1-yard touchdown run from Steven Mitchell for the game’s first score.

After Noah Waynick returned an interception 51 yards to pay dirt to get the Highlanders (0-3) on the board, Huntington closed the deficit to 14 on Gavin Lochow’s 21-yard TD run.

But Torrance Walker returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score to help the Patriots create separation again.

Spring Mills stays unbeaten

Keon Padmore-Johnson hit on 10-of-15 passes for 162 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for an additional 147 yards and two scores to key Spring Mills to a 52-28 win over Jefferson.

The Cardinals (3-0) built a 24-7 halftime led and surpasssed 50 points for the third time in as many games.

Chase Henson added 63 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Elsewhere in the eastern panhandle

Musselman tailback Blake Hartman became the school’s all-time leading rusher in the Applemen’s 43-7 win over Holidaysburg (Pa). Hartman exceeded 5,200 yards for his career while helping Musselman improve to 2-1.

Frankfort moved to 3-0 with its second shutout win of the season, this one a 41-0 victory over Berkeley Springs. The Falcons previously blanked Hampshire in a 46-0 win to start the season.

Tygarts Valley 3-0 for second consecutive season

The Bulldogs from Tygarts Valley defeated Valley Wetzel 59-16 Friday night in a game played at Paden City High School. Aiden Rowe had a receiving touchdown, 3 interceptions and 103 receiving yards for TVHS. Tygarts Valley has allowed just 22 points in their 3-0 start as they seek back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in school history.

Byrd stays unbeaten, King keeps rolling

Robert C. Byrd improved to 3-0 with a 41-0 triumph over Preston. Junior running back Jeremiah King toted the ball for 153 yards and he now has 10 touchdowns on the season. Xavier Lopez threw for 386 yards passing in the win. The Flying Eagles will face arch rival Bridgeport (2-0) next week in their annual matchup.

Independence cruises against Shady

Another successful day at the office for Independence junior running back Atticus Goodson in the Patriots’ 56-8 win over Shady Spring. He rushed for 286 yards and scored 6 touchdowns as the Patriots ran their record to 3-0. IHS has outscored their opponents 182-16 this season and they are off to their first 3-0 start in 5 seasons.

Krajeski leads Clay to another victory

Clay County joined the pack of 3-0 teams with a 38-3 win over Class AAA Hedgesville. Senior signal caller Grant Krajeski had 200 yards passing and 3 touchdowns to pace the Panthers. On defense, Clay collected nine sacks in the game. Dating back to the 2018 season finale, Clay has posted an 11-2 record in their last 13 games.

Beavers tune up for Princeton rematch with win at Beckley

Carson Deeb tossed 4 touchdown passes and threw for 198 yards as Bluefield rolled over Beckley 48-2. The Beavers are now 2-0 and will face Princeton in a rare regular season rematch next Friday.

Princeton serves notice with win over South

Speaking of the Tigers, they notched an impressive victory with a 34-14 triumph over Parkersburg South. Grant Cochran tossed a pair of touchdown passes and Jason Honaker had a punt return for a touchdown as PHS evened their record at 1-1. Sam Schuler had 212 yards passing for the Patriots in the losing effort.

Lewis County back on track with win at Ripley

The Minutemen of Lewis County (2-1) scored 15 points off Ripley turnovers in a 29-13 road victory. Marshall Hobbs rushed for 253 yards for LCHS. Ty Stephens had 206 passing yards for the Vikings.

Big Reds back over .500

After a season-opening loss at Spring Valley, the Big Reds of Parkersburg (2-1) have won back-to-back games. PHS defeated Marietta, Oh. 34-20. Bryson Singer rushed for 205 yards for Parkersburg and had two total touchdowns to lead the way.

Wirt records 500th win

Eight different Wirt County players scored at least one touchdown as the Tigers defeated Webster County 76-6. It was the 500th win in program history.

Garrett Parsons had a pair of touchdown runs while Dylan Lowe had two touchdown passes. Parsons also had a punt return for a score. The Tigers are now 2-0. Wirt won an appeal this week overturning a forfeit loss from their season-opening game at Trinity.
