Hershberger returns as East collects first win, 31-14 over Cameron

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Clay Hershberger and Will Sarsfield each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as East Fairmont notched their first victory of the season, 31-14 over Cameron at East-West Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bees dominated the run of play in the second quarter. Hershberger opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown tote. Sarsfield plunged into the end zone from a yard out late in the half, giving East a 14-0 lead at halftime.

“We started to take over the game in the second quarter,” said East Fairmont head coach Shane Eakle. “You could kind of see it so we had some designs in there. Give our quarterback Clay a lot of credit, he and Will Sarsfield. Then we were able to put our young kid in there with Nick (O’Dell) and he got some nice, big holes. Our offensive line did a better job of staying on people and picking up the blitzes. That was a big thing out of those three-man fronts we struggled with. They did a nice job tonight.”

Hershberger was injured and did not play in East Fairmont’s loss to Braxton County last week. With the junior signal caller back in the lineup, the Bees posted a season-high point total. His 9-yard touchdown run on East Fairmont’s opening possession of the third quarter gave East a 21-0 lead.

Cameron (2-2) responded with a pair of touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to pull within 10 points at 24-14. Freshman quarterback Colton Wichterman had a 5-yard scoring run and tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Ball.

Sarsfield’s second touchdown run of the game with 2:50 left put the game out of reach.

“It is the first time we really haven’t shot ourselves in the foot all year. Maybe we are starting to see some glimpses so we are excited about it.”
