MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Nearly two dozen high school football games in Week 8 have been taken off the schedule due to Saturday’s release of the COVID-19 metrics map.
In addition, several soccer and cross country teams have had their seasons brought to an early completion. Postseasons for both of those sports begin next week, but the COVID map remains the decisive metric on what teams can or cannot compete.
Doddridge County is in the red category for next week, bringing all extracurricular activities to a halt.
Berkeley, Mingo, Morgan, Randolph, Upshur, Wirt and Wyoming counties are orange, meaning no competitions can be held.
Gilmer, Jefferson, Marshall, Pendleton and Wood counties are gold, meaning teams can only compete against teams from other gold counties.
Football games canceled (involving red & Orange County teams):
- Doddridge County at Roane County
- Frankfort at Elkins
- Trinity at Tygarts Valley
- East Fairmont at Berkeley Springs

Additionally, the Doddridge County cross country teams will not be allowed to compete in Thursday’s regional meet due to their status as a red county. The Doddridge boys are ranked No. 1 in the Class A runwv.com rankings while the Doddridge girls are second.
Doddridge County Superintendent of Schools Adam Cheeseman released this statement Saturday evening:
Soccer teams from all orange counties (Berkeley, Mingo, Morgan, Randolph, Upshur, Wirt and Wyoming) will not be allowed to compete in sectional tournaments, which open on Monday. Teams from gold counties may compete without restriction in soccer sectionals.
