Woman enters plea for infant’s death in Marshall County

Kace Schmigal

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — A Hancock County woman will spent at least the next three years in prison for her role in the death of her child in Marshall County.

Kace Schmigal, 31, of Chester entered a guilty plea Friday to a charge of child neglect resulting in death. A judge immediately gave her the maximum prison sentence.

Schmigal was charged back in July days after she brought the unresponsive infant to Wheeling Hospital. Prosecutors told the court Schmigal told hospital personnel she woke up lying on the infant. The child, age three months, had suffered ligament damage and a possible brain bleed according to the Medical Examiner.

A criminal complaint indicates police secured footage from the door bell security system of the Benwood home where the incident occurred. The RING footage included images of Schmigal buying drugs and using what appeared to be drugs.

A judge Friday sentenced Schmigal to 3 to 15 years in prison.
