ELKVIEW, W.Va. — A domestic dispute between an elderly couple is believed to be at the heart to an early morning shooting death.
Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford said an 85-year old woman shot her 89-year old husband, killing him, around 1:40 a.m. Friday.
“There was obviously an altercation between the two. The female did have injuries to her arms,” Rutherford told reporters Friday.
Deputies say the woman described the situation as a domestic violence incident and she was protecting herself. The woman is not in custody and for now does not appear to be facing charges.
“The investigation is continuing. We’re working with the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s office to determine whether or not charges should be filed,” he said.
The names of the two individuals were not released pending notification of out of state relatives. Sheriff Rutherford said it was unclear if there was a history of domestic violence in the household, but he said it was not a home where deputies had previously been called to respond. According to the sheriff, the couple had been married for quite some time, but he wasn’t certain of how long.
Rutherford also indicated there was no indication of dementia or other mental illness involving either of the elderly victims.
The woman is cooperating with authorities.
“The woman made the phone call and stated she had shot her husband,” said Rutherford.
