CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Eight additional deaths, all people over the age of 50, were confirmed through the state Department of Health and Human Resources at the start of the day Tuesday.
Those West Virginia residents were a man from Upshur County, age 79, a man from Cabell County, age 89, two women from Cabell County, ages 79 and 83, a man from Kanawha County, age 57, a man from Fayette County, age 83, a woman from Jefferson County, age 87, and a man from Raleigh County, 54.
Total state virus deaths in the coronavirus pandemic were at 432.
“As we continue the fight against this pandemic, we are devastated by the loss of more West Virginians,” said Bill Crouch, DHHR secretary, in a statement.
“The families of these residents are in our thoughts.”
Active cases numbered 4,428 with 483 new cases reported between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, according to DHHR.
At that point, West Virginia’s daily COVID-19 infection rate was back above three percent at 3.47 percent. The cumulative infection rate was 2.87 percent.
The number of reported hospitalizations, 221, was larger Tuesday than at any other point in the pandemic.
Of those patients, 74 were said to be in intensive care and 26 were on ventilators.
