State confirms 7 additional COVID-19 deaths

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Health and Human Resources confirmed seven additional COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia, moving the overall number to 443 since the pandemic began.

The deaths included an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Wetzel County, a 73-year old female from Wetzel County, a 66-year old female from Wetzel County, a 66-year old female from Wetzel County, a 74-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 70-year old male from Kanawha County.

“Today is a difficult day in our fight against COVID-19,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said. “As we work to slow the growth of this virus in West Virginia, we extend our deepest sympathies to these families.”

The state has reported 19 deaths in the past week.

Hospitalizations climbed to 238 in Thursday’s report, the highest since the pandemic again. Of those, 84 patients are in intensive care with 28 of those patients on ventilators.

The DHHR reported 402 new COVID-19 cases. Active cases are now at 4,747 and the daily positive test rate at 2.97%.

Wyoming County showed enough improvement to move out of the “red” category on the daily COVID-19 map Thursday. Mingo County is the only county in “red.”

Thirty-three free COVID-19 testing events are scheduled for Thursday and Friday in 21 counties.
