DHHR reports 524 new COVID-19 cases

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A significant increase in COVID-19 testing events in West Virginia has resulted in a substantial jump in new COVID-19 cases.

Friday morning’s daily report from the state Department of Health and Human Resources added 524 new cases. The daily positive test rate is now 3.77%. The state along with local health departments have administered an average of 9,588 tests the last two days. Gov. Jim Justice announced earlier this month the goal was to reach 10,000 tests a day in hopes of finding possible super spreaders of the virus.

Thirty-six free testing events in 22 counties are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The DHHR also added eight deaths Friday including a 93-year old female from Cabell County, a 90-year old male from Wetzel County, an 84-year old male from Kanawha County, a 55-year old male from Cabell County, an 82-year old female from Monongalia County, an 83-year old male from Monongalia County, a 73-year old male from Fayette County, and an 89-year old female from Fayette County. Total COVID-19 deaths now stand at 451.

Mingo County was the only county in the “red” category on the daily alert map Friday. There are 11 other counties with at least one “red” metric.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 continue to climb in the Mountain State. The number increased to 240 Friday with 75 people in intensive care and 27 of them on ventilators.
