State officials confident in COVID testing opportunities, continue push

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State officials continue to push for more people in the community to get tested for COVID-19 has more opportunities to arise.

Ayne Amjad, the West Virginia Public Health Officer and state Adj. Gen. James Hoyer with the National Guard spoke Friday on the opportunities growing in the state.

Hoyer said the state is putting together a surge capacity in place in communities per orders of mass testing by Gov. Jim Justice. He said the state is having steady capabilities thanks to sites at Walgreens, Fruth, CVS and independent pharmacies.

10,849 COVID-19 tests were submitted to the state Department of Health and Human Resources on Sunday. The DHHR confirmed a daily record of 662 cases.

Hoyer is impressed with the testing opportunities and said Hurley’s Pharmacy in Williamson is beginning Monday.

“Building that steady-state piece is what is in progress,” Hoyer said. “Right now what you are seeing is that surge capacity we had to put in place.”

Amjad said in addition to schools, health departments and pharmacies, churches and faith-based communities are getting in on becoming involved in testing.

“We’ve had multiple meetings with our church communities in the state, with different faith-based leaders around the state,” she said. “We need to give them the opportunities to have saliva kits available to not only test in their parking lots but to give them the kits to use in their communities.”

The state has dozens of testing sites set for Monday.
