Inmate assault-related death reported at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, W.Va. — An inmate at the state’s maximum prison died following a Friday night assault, authorities said.

The assault took place in a housing unit at Mount Olive State Prison in Fayette County at about 8:45 p.m.

Authorities said inmate Brian O’Neill Gifft, 40, was attacked with a makeshift weapon by a fellow inmate. Gifft, who was serving a life sentence after a 2016 murder conviction in Jefferson County, died outside the prison.

The identification of the suspect will be released once the investigation is complete, authorities said.
