West Virginia surpasses 13,000 active COVID-19 cases

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia has surpassed 13,000 active coronavirus cases, the state Department of Health and Human Resources announced on Sunday.

The department reported 13,340 active cases, including 880 cases received between the agency’s Saturday and Sunday reports.

Health officials also confirmed four deaths associated with the pandemic: a 91-year-old male from Mineral County, a 72-year-old male from Mineral County, an 80-year-old Mineral County male and a 60-year-old female from Summers County. The four deaths bring to statewide total for the pandemic to 662.

The number of cases involving hospitalizations and intensive care are 433 and 133 respectively, and 59 cases include ventilators.

Berekely, Marshall, Mineral, Ritchie and Wirt counties are red on the department’s county alert system map. Barbour, Brooke, Boone, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Jackson, Jefferson, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Ohio, Preston, Putnam, Wayne and Wood counties are orange.
