CHARLESTON, W.Va. — COVID-19 hospitalizations shot up to 510 patients in information released Wednesday by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
The pandemic high in hospitalizations jumped from 463 to 510 in one day. The number is expected to climb with one of the state’s largest hospital systems, Charleston Area Medical Center, experiencing a surge in patients this week.
CAMC reported 92 COVID-19 patients on its website Wednesday morning. That number was 80 on Tuesday and 67 on Monday. CAMC’s previous peak was 82 patients in mid-September.
Overall hospitalizations were at 429 patients a week ago. There are 144 patients in ICU beds across the state including 65 patients being treated with ventilators.
Thirteen deaths were added by the state Wednesday, taking the overall total to 695. The deaths included an 84-year old female from Cabell County, a 97-year old female from Mineral County, a 73-year old male from Mineral County, an 84-year old female from Harrison County, an 80-year old female from Mineral County, a 68-year old male from Marshall County, a 76-year old male from Marshall County, a 95-year old male from Marshall County, an 86-year old female from Marshall County, an 83-year old male from Marshall County, a 94-year old female from Marshall County, a 93-year old female from Marshall County, and an 80-year old male from Cabell County.
“Protecting the health, safety and well-being of every West Virginian is our ultimate goal,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said. “In these days of sadness, we must find the strength to support our friends and neighbors while continuing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by practicing safety measures we know work: wearing masks, washing hands, keeping a safe physical distance from others, utilizing free COVID-19 testing, and when possible, staying home.”
The state’s daily positivity test rate is now at 4.81%. The county alert system map has Mingo, Wirt, Marshall and Mineral counties in the “red” category. There are 15 counties in “gold.”
