Tucker notes success of fall semester amid coronavirus pandemic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With university students back home following a fall semester impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is commending institutions, students and education leaders for their efforts in limiting cases.

Sarah Amstrong Tucker told MetroNews last week less than 1% of university students, faculty and staff tested positive for the coronavirus during the semester.

“That’s a huge testament to what all of our institutions have done, what all of our presidents have done, what all of our faculty have done, but also what all of our students have done,” she said. “Our students have worked hard to make themselves safe and adhere to the guidelines and principles that the institutions have put forth, and I couldn’t be happier that we were able to provide this fall experience for them in a way that was safe.”

Tuck added she wished students were able to experience a more traditional fall semester, but students made the best of a difficult situation.

“When talking to students, everyone understands that this time is just different,” she said. “It’s not just they’re having to do something different in college. They have to do something different when they see their grandparents or go to the grocery store or out in the community. We’re just in a strange time right now, and they do understand that if they want to stay in college and they want to take these classes, they’re going to have to adhere to the precautions that the institutions have put in place. They’ve done so really, really well.”

Students will complete their course work after Thanksgiving through virtual instruction.
