After sales declines in 2020 due to COVID, a new Girl Scout cookie season is starting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Online sales are being emphasized during the 2021 Girl Scout Cookie Season which opened Friday for the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council.

Candace Nelson, marketing director for GSBDC, said the shift would allow for following of coronavirus protocols.

“COVID hit during the middle of our cookie season last year which really had an impact on a lot our Girl Scouts’ goals for the year,” she said.

“I think we’re coming back stronger than ever. Our girls have set really high goals and these cookie sales really help fund their activities for the whole year.”

Cookie options this year included Samoas, Thin Mints, Trefoils, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Girl Scout S’mores and Toffee-tastics along with Lemon-Ups which launched last year.

Nationally, the best-selling Girl Scout cookies are Thin Mints.

Nelson said, for the Black Diamond Council, Samoas are in the top spot.

Her favorites are the Tagalongs.

“You get the chocolate and the peanut butter plus the crunch. It’s just the perfect cookie to me,” Nelson said.

Cookie orders can be placed directly with Girl Scouts or online with delivery via scouts or by mail.

More information about cookie sources was available by emailing cookies@bdgsc.org.

Along with personal purchases, cookies can also be bought for others. The Gift of Caring Program provides donated cookies to military members, veterans and their families every year.

Girl Scout cookie sales date back to 1917.

Today, the Black Diamond Council includes nearly 8,000 Girl Scouts from 61 counties in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.

Over the years, Nelson said the goal of the cookie sales has not changed.

“When you’re buying a box of cookies, of course you’re getting a delicious treat, but you’re also really helping a Girl Scout fund her camping trip or letting her go to a different part of the state she’s never seen before,” she said.

“It’s really beneficial to both, hopefully, the community as well as our Girl Scouts.”
