MEC Roundup: West Liberty deals Glenville State first loss of season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference had three games Monday evening. One team snapped a historic losing streak and the other lost its first game of the year.

All three home teams won yesterday by an average of 28 points. Also, two of the three home teams scored above 100 points.

No. 9 West Liberty 117, No. 17 Glenville State 85

The West Liberty Hilltoppers snapped their third game losing streak by handing the Pioneers their first loss of the season. It was West Liberty’s 13th straight win over Glenville State. The Hilltoppers saw five players record double-digits, including a 26-point performance from senior Dalton Bolon.

A West Liberty 6-0 run midway through the first half allowed them to extend their lead to double-figures. The Hilltoppers would outscore the Pioneers 22-14 in the final 7:22 of the first half. West Liberty went into the half leading by 52-34.

The Hilltoppers would pick up right where it left off. West Liberty lead would never go down past 18. The Hilltoppers would lead by as many as 33 in the game. West Liberty defense held Glenville State’s leading scorer, Hegel Augustin, to a season-low 10 points.

The Hilltoppers other contributors were Pat Robinson with 20 points, Will Yoakum tallying 18, and Elijah Watson and Bryce Butler both recording 10 points each. The Pioneers were led by a 21-point performance from John Williams. He also stole the ball four times for a new season-high.

Fairmont State 101, Alderson Broaddus 67

The No. 25 Fairmont State Fighting Falcons returned to action Monday evening for the first time in two weeks. The Fighting Falcons’ 34-point victory is the second margin of victory of FSU this season.

Fairmont State shot lights out in the first half shooting 69% from the field, including 58% from behind the arc. The Fighting Falcons would increase their lead to double-digits around the 16-minute mark, and they would not let their foot off the gas the rest of the way. Fairmont State’s lead would get as high as 28-points right before halftime. FSU went into the locker room leading 57-29.

The Fighting Falcons’ lead would reach 37 with six and a half minutes left in the game, and AB would not trim it anymore. FSU would cool off in the second half shooting 41% from the field and 36% from three-point range.

FSU saw five players reach double-figures, including Dale Bonner tying his season-high with 22 points. Former Fairmont Senior prospect Zyon Dobbs dropped a career-high 20 points. The Fighting Falcons starting five combined for 76 points. AB’s Coryon Rice dropped a season-high 17-points. Junior Christian Miller-Cardwell tallied 11-points as well.

Notre Dame College 88, WV Wesleyan 70

Notre Dame College has now won two of its last three following an 0-3 start to the condensed season. The Falcons snapped a two-game losing streak against the Bobcats.

There were four lead changes and two ties in the game’s beginning minutes. NDC would lead by eight with under 10-minutes left in the first half. The two teams would go back and forth until a three from the Falcons gave them their largest lead of nine. The Bobcats would respond finishing the half on a 12-6 run, which cut the Falcons lead to three heading into the break.

NDC would start off the second half slow, but it responded with a 9-2 run in almost two minutes. The Falcons lead would creep as high as 23-points with less than a minute and a half left in the game. NDC outscored the W.Va. Wesleyan 51-36 in the second half.

The Falcons were led by junior Jordan Roland with a season-high 22-points. NDC also saw double-digit performances from John Godinez (18) and Jordan Burton (15). The Bobcats were led by a combined 42 points from Jaylin Reed and Daylin Lee.
