CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Health and Human Resources recorded more COVID-19 test results Wednesday than it has in the past week resulting in the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past week.
The agency’s Thursday morning report shows 431 newly confirmed cases of the virus. There were 11,297 tests posted by various health departments at the end of the day Wednesday.
The number of active cases has dropped again. The number is now at 8,020. Active cases haven’t been below 8,000 since Nov. 10, 2020.
There were five new COVID-19 deaths listed in Thursday’s report including a 73-year old male from Kanawha County, a 65-year old female from Brooke County, a 66-year old male from Summers County, an 84-year old male from Tucker County, and a 77-year old male from Raleigh County.
“It is with great sadness that we announce more lives lost to this pandemic,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said. “Our sympathies and thoughts go out to these families.”
Hospitalizations remain steady at 282.
More than 175,000 state residents have now been fully vaccinated, which is nearly 10% of the population.
