CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active cases of COVID-19 increased in Thursday’s report for the second day in a row and only the third time in the past two months.
The state Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reported 5,301 active cases of COVID-19 Thursday, up from 5,206 on Wednesday and 5, 176 on Tuesday.
Before the increase from Tuesday to Wednesday, active cases in West Virginia had been going steadily down since January 10 when the state hit a peak of 29,297 active cases. The state went nearly 60 days with active cases decreasing until a slight change last weekend.
382 new cases were confirmed by the DHHR on Thursday along with five additional deaths. The statewide death total is now 2,570.
DHHR has confirmed the deaths of a 57-year old female from Jefferson County, a 54-year old female from Boone County, an 81-year old male from Webster County, a 95-year old female from Hancock County, and a 50-year old male from Brooke County.
“As a state, we share in the sorrow of all who have lost a loved one to COVID-19 and promise to continue striving toward ending this pandemic,” said Bill J. Crouch, Cabinet Secretary of DHHR.
Webster County joined Hardy County in the red on the county alert map for virus spread. Eight counties are in the next level down, orange.
Hospitalizations for COVID-19 sit at 192, a slight increase from 190 on Wednesday and from over the last week when it was 159 one week ago.
The state said Thursday there have now been more than 252,000 state residents who have been fully vaccinated. 405,421 first doses have been administered.
