Active COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations increase in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia have increased by 386 in the past week.

Daily active cases were trending toward the 5,000 mark a week ago at 5,214 but Monday those active cases had risen to 5,600.

According to the state Department of Health and Human Resources, the state’s daily positive test rate was 5.21% Monday with six new deaths.

Overall deaths are now at 2,612 including an 86-year old male from Cabell County, a 68-year old male from Putnam County, an 81-year old male from Kanawha County, a 65-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old male from Putnam County, and a 64-year old male from Upshur County.

“As we express our deepest sympathies to these families, we must continue doing our part to combat further spread of this disease by wearing our masks, utilizing the free testing and receiving our vaccine when it’s our turn,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch.

Jefferson County was the only county in red on Monday’s COVID-19 daily alert map.

COVID-19 related hospitalizations increased in 198 Monday, the highest number since March 1.

The state has now fully vaccinated 268,000 residents.
