HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Students at one Cabell County School will return to their building to have school five days a week, in person , for the first time in more than a calendar year.
Children will be rolling into Davis Creek Elementary School in Huntington this morning. The students returned to a blended learning schedule a few months ago, but the return plan was derailed when the area was hit with high water March 1.
“We had between three and four feet of water in six rooms on the basement side of Davis Creek,” said Assistant Cabell County Superintendent for Operations Kim Cooper.
The damaged forced students to be home bound for several more weeks as crews worked to clean up the mess and repair the damage.
“It got into some of our HVAC equipment. It’s been repaired and replaced and we’ve had air quality tests done to make sure there are no mold spores. We’ve also gone in and completely refurbished the underneath of the building,” Cooper explained.
Cooper expected students to be excited about a return to a regular school schedule. He said the plan is for the children to finish up the school year in the building on a five-day, in-person schedule. But he added in today’s world nothing is a guarantee.
“This is 2020 going into 2021 so anything is possible,” he laughed.
