Marshall celebrates opening of graduate student housing complex on campus

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University officially commemorated the opening of a graduate student housing complex on campus, the first of its kind at the university and unique to the region according to President Jerome Gilbert.

‘The Landing’ opened to students in Fall of 2019 alongside Stephen J. Kopp Hall on 14th Street, home to the Marshall University School of Pharmacy, but the COVID-19 pandemic derailed plans for an opening ceremony. A ribbon-cutting was held with Marshall and City of Huntington officials on Tuesday, the same day the facility’s new gym opened.

According to Gilbert, there are 280 beds in The Landing with 200 fully furnished studio and two-bedroom apartments. The apartments feature stainless steel appliances, study and community space and 24-hour security and parking with close walking distance to the schools of medicine and pharmacy and the forensic science center, a release said.

The president said current graduate students, pharmacy students, medical students, resident physicians and Marshall University faculty and staff can apply to live there. Many current residents include those in the pharmacy school, physical therapy and physician assistant programs.

“This is really geared towards supporting the professional programs. We are excited we have this to offer students which many universities do not have this type of facility,” Gilbert told MetroNews.

Gilbert said residents at the new complex have been asked to follow the same COVID-19 guidelines as the rest of campus including wearing masks outside of their rooms and sanitation of common areas.

The university has treated roommates as family units at this complex and residence halls during the pandemic over the past year.

“We didn’t know if it would or not, but it didn’t present any problems of having roommates living in the same rooms. They were careful together, hung out together and did things together. They even isolated together. It was not a real issue at all,” Gilbert said.

As of Tuesday, Marshall’s COVID-19 dashboard listed only one student in quarantine on campus due to the virus and eight students in isolation. Walk-up vaccination clinics have been taking place on campus in Huntington.

The gym addition that opened Tuesday features more than a dozen fitness implements, which are available to residents 24/7.

During the recent ice storm in February, The Landing was able to house some AEP workers who were here from other states.

Gilbert cut the ribbon alongside members of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and the Marshall University Board of Governors.
