MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A proposed policy change that would further reward Berkeley County school employees for missing less than 15 days of work a year went out for a 10-day public comment period Tuesday.
The one-time incentive would add $500 to the current sick leave incentive of $1,500.
Berkeley County School Superintendent Patrick Murphy said this is a way to thank workers in a challenging year.
“This year has been an extraordinary year. This is in some way thanking folks and letting them know that we appreciate the work that they have done,” Murphy said.
Berkeley County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Justin Schooley told the county school board this week days missed for COVID won’t count against workers.
“We feel that the COVID leave was a straight 10 days throughout this school year and it doesn’t count against any leave bank at all,” Schooley told the board. “So we’re giving employees the ability to miss up to 15 days that they would have during this school year.”
The Berkeley County BOE will vote on the additional incentive following the comment period.
