Active cases go back above 7,000

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources on Wednesday reported 453 new cases of Covid 19 in West Virginia. The number pushed active cases back up to 7,081 a day after the number had fallen below 7,000 for the first time in three weeks.

Eleven fatalities were reported Wednesday blamed on the virus. The state’s total fatalities number 2,673.

The state’s daily positivity rate was 3.43 percent and two counties, Wetzel and Berkeley, were red on the daily alert map. Greenbrier, Hardy, McDowell, and Raleigh County would be red under alternative metrices. Red is the highest level of transmission of the virus.

West Virginians who have been vaccinated continued to slowly build. Those fully vaccinated were 566,476. Another 704, 441 have received the first vaccine does. Officials continue to push to find ways to jump that number higher with various vaccination strategies.

There were 248 people hospitalized with the virus on Wednesday, 83 were begin treated in ICU and 24 of those individuals were on a ventilator.
