Investigation underway following toddler drowning in Big Wheeling Creek

LIMESTONE, W.Va. — The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what happened that caused a toddler to drown in the Big Wheeling Creek on Wednesday.

Authorities said a 2-year old girl was reported missing around 5:30 p.m. First responders with Limestone EMS arrived on the scene and pulled the child from the creek that is nearby to a residence.

Emergency crews began life-saving procedures but the child was pronounced dead at Wheeling Hospital a short time later.

The sheriff’s department is interviewing family members. It’s initially believed to be an accident.
