Deputies confirm drowning in Cheat Lake

CHEAT LAKE, W.Va. — A person drowned in the backwaters of Cheat Lake in Monongalia County Tuesday night.

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the drowning Wednesday afternoon. Deputies said it happened in the Morgans Run area.

The victim was attempting to swim to a concrete pier, went under the water and did not resurface. Others at the scene tried to help the swimmer but were unsuccessful.

Authorities said dive teams from Morgantown and Marion County recovered the body at just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The name of the victim hasn’t been released.
