Williamstown rides 15-hit attack to claim sectional title

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. — Williamstown scored in every inning in a 12-2 victory over Ritchie County in the Class A Region I, Section 2 title game. The No. 10 Yellowjackets pounded out 15 hits in the five-inning contest. Eight of the nine players in Williamstown’s starting lineup had at least one hit.

“That has been the key to our success. When our one through nine hit, we are hitting very well and we are scoring a lot of runs and manufacturing runs,” said Williamstown head coach Levi Maxwell.

Leewood Molessa led WHS (15-10) at the plate with three hits. Chase Barkley, Brady Ankrom, Luke Ankrom and Harbour Haught each had two-hit games.

Barkley went the distance on the mound for Williamstown. He scattered seven hits and stranded the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

“Chase just throws strikes. He just pounds the zone and he is usually the guy that has a low pitch count the entire game. He keeps hitters off balance and does a really good job of hiding his pitches.”

Williamstown has scored 33 runs in their three sectional tournament games. The Yellowjackets await the Section 1 winner in the regional round, which is set to begin on June 14.

“You have to win the first game. That is key. We did a really good job against St. Marys,” Maxwell said. “We did a really good job this week.

“It is imperative that you attack each moment that you have. We can’t take it easy. We have to keep preparing.”

Garrett Cunningham had a pair of RBI doubles for the Rebels.
