Monongalia County Commission changes mask mandate for county buildings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Commission agreed Wednesday to end the mask mandate in county buildings for West Virginians who are fully vaccinated for the coronavirus.

Commission President Sean Sikora said during the body’s meeting the decision was made following consecutive weeks of declining active case numbers.

“My last report from the health department says we’re down to 0.7 cases per 100,000 people,” Sikora said. “That’s the lowest we’ve been in a long time, and the numbers have consistently been dropping.”

County employees still have access to plexiglass and can wear facial coverings. Elected officials are also allowed to establish their own guidelines.

“Each elected officer may address the mask differently for their particular office,” Sikora said. “For the must part we were all in unison.”

According to the state Department of Health and Human Resources, there were 18 active cases in Monongalia County as of Wednesday morning.
