David Bradshaw claims 12th West Virginia Open title

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — It has taken David Bradshaw less than two decades to make a serious run at a record once thought unreachable. Bradshaw secured his 12th West Virginia Open title Friday at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. His 54-hole total of 5-under was three strokes better than Bridgeport native Mason Williams.

Bradshaw posted a final round of 71. He and Williams were the only golfers to break par in the final round and post a tournament score under par. Bradshaw entered the final round with a three-shot cushion and briefly saw that lead shrink to a single shot. However, the Shepherd University graduate made just one bogey over the final ten holes to secure the championship.

Bradshaw is within striking distance of Sam Snead’s record of 17 state open titles. He will compete in the Tri-State PGA Frank Fuhrer, Jr. Invitational in Pittsburgh next week.

Mason Williams earned runner-up honors and low amateur honors at 2-under. Fellow Bridgeport native Woody Woodward finished third at 2-over. Defending champion Ken Hess was fourth at 3-over and Nick Fleming completed the top five at 5-over.

13-time state amateur champion Pat Carter was the low senior golfer. He finished tied for ninth at 8-over.
