MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU’s next recruiting class has been bolstered by a verbal commitment from a four-star cornerback from South Florida. 6-foot, 178-pound rising senior Jacolby Spells selected West Virginia over other finalists Arizona State, Arkansas, Indiana and Miami.

Spells also holds scholarship offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan State, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Virginia, UAB and UCF. He received an offer from West Virginia in May 2020.

Spells plays for American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. The Patriots claimed the Florida 5A state championship last fall with an 11-2 record. He collected 32 tackles and an interception in 11 games. Spells’ high school head coach is 11-year NFL defensive back Patrick Surtain.

Mumu Bin-Wahad and Tyrin Woodby are also defensive back commitments in the WVU Class of 2022. Spells is the eleventh verbal commitment to this year’s class.
