Early goal leads No. 4 Virginia to a 1-0 win at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A goal in the seventh minute proved to be the lone tally of the match as No. 4 Virginia blanked No. 12 West Virginia, 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Virginia (2-0) tallied the only goal they would need when Samar Guidry sent a cross into the box that was headed into the net by Diana Ordonez.

“They had that one chance and a team like Virginia is so talented and [Ordonez] is so good that she is going to finish that,” said WVU head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Unfortunately, she finished her chance. I thought we came out strong in the second half. But a team like this, you need to play 90 [minutes] consistently. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t put it together.”

The goal for Ordonez was her third of the season in just two matches.

The teams posted nearly identical statistics throughout the match. UVA had a 4-3 edge in shots and a 6-5 lead into corner kicks. The Mountaineers were able to generate better pressure in the second half but were unable to find the scoresheet.

“I believe the midfield was able to find pockets. We were able to adjust to what Virginia showed us in the first half. And the effort to make an extra run, getting an extra angle, but I thought the midfield did a really good job of getting us in a rhythm and getting us forward.

“The effort is almost to where we need it. We have some really good understanding of our shape offensively and defensively. Now it is just fine tuning it.”

West Virginia stands 1-1 after the opening weekend. The Mountaineers will hit the road for the first time Friday when they visit Buckell.
