Active coronavirus cases decline, but hospitalizations rise

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The number of confirmed active coronavirus cases in West Virginia has fallen by more than 4,000 since the state reached a record on Friday.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources on Sunday reported 25,074 active cases with 1,604 new cases since its Saturday update.

The department also reported new records for hospitalizations, intensive care cases and people on ventilators for the virus. According to the state, 955 West Virginians are hospitalized, of which 292 people are in intensive care and 170 people are on ventilators. A majority of these cases involve unvaccinated people; 82.7% of hospitalized West Virginians did not receive a coronavirus vaccine, including 91.1% of intensive care cases and 91.8% of people on ventilators.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 935,803 West Virginians — 52.2% of all West Virginians and 60.1% of residents 12 years old and older — are fully vaccinated.

The state did not report any new deaths related to the pandemic on Sunday; 3,370 West Virginians have died from the virus.
