Huntington comes alive late, stays undefeated with 9-6 win over Spring Valley

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — No. 2 Huntington forced three fourth quarter turnovers and scored nine points in the final frame to down No. 6 Spring Valley, 9-6 in a defensive showcase at Bob Sang Stadium.

“Not a great performance out of us tonight but when you play good football teams, you are going to have nights where you may not play as well,” said Huntington head coach Billy Seals. “Spring Valley has a heck of a football team and that is what high school football is all about. That was a whale of a ball game with a lot of respect on both sides. That team is going to win a heck of a lot of games.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Spring Valley (4-2) broke the stalemate with a 9-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a Dalton Fouch 10-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Caldwell. The Timberwolves led 6-0 at halftime.

Huntington (6-0) dominated field possession in the second half but could not score in the third quarter.

“I told the guys that it is 6-0 and we get the ball to start the second half. We had a great drive, didn’t score on it but we ran the football well.”

Just seconds into the fourth quarter, Huntington’s defense forced their first turnover of the game. Tyrees Smith recovered a fumble at the Spring Valley 9-yard line. Two plays later, Curtis Jones scored on a 6-yard run. The point after gave Huntington a 7-6 lead.

The Highlander defense pinned Spring Valley in their territory the rest of the way. Huntington forced an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone, extending their lead to 9-6 with a safety. Amari Felder and Zah’Terlious Jackson collected late interceptions to seal the win.

“We expect to win every week. That’s our mindset and we take it game to game. 1-0 every week is what we preach. We’ll enjoy this for 24 [hours] and get ready for Woodrow Wilson.
