3 people — including alleged shooter — dead following shooting, police pursuit

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. — A Logan County man allegedly killed his parents on Monday before authorities shot him in an altercation.

According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Shawn Dempsey allegedly shot his parents — Shawn and Karen Dempsey, both 52 — at their Brogue Road residence. He then proceeded to take the couple’s car.

Officers said the shooting stemmed from an argument between Dempsey and his parents.

Several local and state agencies searched for Dempsey. Members of the West Virginia State Police followed him to Cub Branch where authorities had set up a roadblock. Dempsey drove through the roadblock and toward an area near 12 Pole in Mingo County, where his car got stuck.

Authorities said Dempsey shot at officers, who returned fire and killed him.
