New River Gorge fire shrinks; Pennsylvania crew arrives to assist with containment

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. — A fire in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve has shrunk because of containment efforts on Thursday.

The fire in the Beauty Mountain area had grown to 150 acres as of Thursday morning. The National Park Service told MetroNews the blaze shrunk to 132 acres by the evening, and crews have contained 50% of the fire.

According to the National Park Service, there has been enough moisture to halt the fire’s spread. Crews have put a solid control line on the west end of the fire.

A 10-person fire module from Pennsylvania arrived at the national park on Thursday. The crew will assist with containment work on Friday, which will include mop-up efforts and ensuring the north end of the fire is secure.
