DOH awards contract for replacing McDowell County bridge

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Highways has awarded a contract for replacing a 106-year-old bridge in McDowell County.

State officials announced SMH Construction Company Inc. received the $1.6 million contract for replacing the Big Creek Arch Bridge, which goes over Big Creek near Berwind.

According to the Division of Highways, failure to replace the bridge would cause lengthy detours for drivers and commercial traffic.

Funding for the project comes from the state Roads to Prosperity program and a June 2021 bond sale from the West Virginia Parkways Authority.
